DEVELOPING A SUSTAINABLE REGION - AIG/LINCOLN INITIATES CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPEAN (CEE) DEVELOPERS’ SUSTAINABILITY FORUM On the 7th of August 2008 AIG/Lincoln and BRE (Global) brought together several major developers and environmental consultants to discuss sustainability issues and how best to implement a voluntary sustainable certification standard across Central and Eastern Europe.
The objectives of the forum were as follows: • Set criteria and standards surpassing those required by regulations • Ensure best environmental practice is incorporated in buildings • Challenge the market to provide innovative solutions which minimise the environmental impact of buildings • Raise the awareness of building stakeholders to the benefits of buildings which have a reduced impact on the environment • Allow organisations to demonstrate progress towards corporate environmental objectives • Understand the implications and timing of the EPCs (Energy Performance Certificates) across Europe
BRE (Global) launched their new BREEAM Europe certification, a document which was two years in the making, and developed from the pilot work carried out by AIG/Lincoln. The document is intended for the use of commercial developers and covers certification for offices and logistic centres.
"We are delighted to have initiated this first meeting in Central & Eastern Europe and see the enthusiastic response from developers, consultants and environmental experts. Environmental certification is an integral part of AIG/Lincoln's development process and it has been a pleasure to work closely with BRE (Global) over the past two years and to contribute to the content of the new BREEAM Europe certification through our pilot projects. It is a document that is very much needed in the region for developers to benchmark and improve their environmental standards.”David Lawrence –AIG/Lincoln, Director Construction Europe
The BREEAM Europe aims to: • Mitigate the impact of buildings on the environment • Provide a credible, environmental label for buildings • Enable buildings to be recognised according to their environmental performance • Allow unambiguous comparison of buildings • Stimulate demand for sustainable buildings
It covers the following main sustainability criteria which are all rigorously controlled and measured: • Management • Health & Wellbeing • Energy (incorporating the new EPCs) • Transport • Water • Materials • Land Use & Ecology • Pollution
In attendance were David Lawrence (AIG/Lincoln), Graham Reece (Prologis), Bogdan Goławski (Orco), Jasper Klwipt (ING Real Estate), Martin Earl (Waterman), Susan Draeger (Buro Happold), Michael Gifford (APA Architects), Clare Lowe, Anne Aubree, Richard Colwell (BRE Global), Christopher Grzesik (Polish Properties), Paul R. Watson, George Philips, Chris Rylands (AIG/Lincoln), Richard Nelson, Kevin Harwood (WGI Architects), Steven Borncamp (Romanian Green Building Council), dr. Aleksander Panek (NAPE). Due to the success of the event, the second forum will take place later this year.
